My sister's youngest son was weaned from his binky, somewhat against her will.
Her son had gone to the cabin with my parents for the weekend. They forgot he used one so didn't offer it to him at all and he never asked for it.
By the time he came home... no more binky.
By the time he came home... no more binky.
I remember her saying that she was sad to see it go, and was in mourning a little over it. I also remember thinking that she was CrAzY!!=)
Now I understand.
Ian is no longer a binky baby.
One more sad reminder that sooner or later I am going to have to stop referring to him as a baby at all!
(Who are we kidding?!? That is NEVER going to happen!!!=)
(Who are we kidding?!? That is NEVER going to happen!!!=)
And the thing is, I knew this day was coming. It's not like it was a surprise, and it is even something I wanted and prepared for. I knew that this was going to be the year for some pretty monumental changes for Ian. Within the next few months, we will begin potty training in earnest and attempt to move him into a big boy bed.
Yeah, I know... BIG CHANGES!!!
And being as we are now just 3 months shy of his third birthday, I knew it was time to give the binky up, but I am sad about it all the same. So many "big boy" things are right around the bend, and it is making my heart ache just a little.
The binky was just the first step, and even though I really am glad it is done, I am going to allow myself a few days (or weeks=) to be sad about losing one more piece of Ian's babyhood. Also, I am sad because Ian didn't necessarily want to give it up, and he is sad now that it is gone, and that is something that is hard for me to accept. We talked about it and he said he was ready, but now that it is gone, he wants it back. Boo!!!
But, as Jimmy would say, "It is what it is" so we are now moving onward and upward!
He really was such a big, brave boy about the whole thing, and it IS a cute story, so let me tell you how Ian came to be binky-less.
Last Saturday, we dropped baby off for a visit with his mom and then Mike and I took Ian to the Gateway mall downtown. We had talked it over beforehand and Ian was prepared to "pay" the fee of two binkies in exchange for a brand new
"Build-A-Bear".
"Build-A-Bear".
When we walked into the store, he ran right past all the animals to the big, fluffing machine. He thought that was SO cool!! Eventually, he came over to look at the animals, but we couldn't convince him to pick one. So Mike and I picked one out for baby Mason to take with him when he leaves us. We let Ian help stuff it, we all put our special wishes for Mason inside, and it was closed up. (Not without a tear or two from this sappy, old mama however =)
He picked the camouflage one and ran back to the fluffing machine to stuff it.
Just like with Mason's bear, we all put special wishes inside just for Ian.
We kissed them and then rubbed our "wish hearts" on Ian's muscles so his bear would be strong and never get sick, and then his bear was closed up too.
Next up, bath time.
Ian chose a "Go Utes!" football uniform and helped me get his bear dressed.

Then he and Daddy went to the computer to give the bear a birth certificate.
Ian decided to name his bear "Broby".
At the checkout counter, the cashier said, "Okay, that will be two binkies please" and Ian handed them up to her like a brave little warrior.
I barely made it outside before I grabbed Ian and told him how proud we were of him for being such a big boy!
I think he was proud too=)
Bye Bye Binky. Hello Big Boy!
